Sexting: Mom, but Vanessa Hudgens does it!

Sexting, a phrase used for sending nude or semi-nude pictures via text messages. Vanessa Hudgens caught sexting. The National Campaign to Prevent Teen & Unplanned Pregnancy and CosmoGirl.com surveyed teens about sex and technology, and said that nearly 1 in 5 teens have sexted. According to a College News story:

• Vermont lawmakers seek to decriminalize sexting by minors
• The state of Vermont does not believe children ages 13-18 should be punished in such harsh ways for sending consensual pictures through text messages.

Schools and parents struggle to find an appropriate way to deal.

The Man behind the Counter

Recently in St. Augustine, Carmelo’s Marketplace convenience store was remodeled and reopened. Whether it is relaxing in the lounge to ordering a 20-inch pizza at the deli, Carmelo’s offers a different experience. The store’s reopening created many opportunities for employment. Hired in the process of finding the appropriate staff was a man by the name of Josh Thompson. We take you inside the life of a man who created a purpose for himself.

Only at the age of 26, Thompson’s intellectuality and experiences have and are taking him so far. Whatever path he chooses for his life will be a successful one. Thompson believes, “No matter what profession or what you do, as long as you enjoy it, you will do it well.” The insight Thompson has on life just from personal experiences are astonishing. The skinny athletic framed Thompson is a white male standing about 6 feet tall. He has brown hair with blue eyes. Although born in Vernal, Utah, Thompson was raised and graduated from high school in Colorado. Thompson grew up in a single-parent home. “College was out of the question for me,” says Thompson. Thompson didn’t have much direction in high school. He grew up with the mentality that college wasn’t an option in his life. After having a child at the age of 18, Thompson felt the most beneficial option for him was to join the Navy. “I was directed by a goal to be an influence in my son’s life,” says Thompson.

The Navy relocated Thompson to Jacksonville, Fla. While in the Navy Thompson was stationed in the helicopter squadron and was given the title of an Aviation Electrician. This title involved electrical theory and many math skills. Being in the Navy really gave Thompson an appreciation for education and learning. Thompson was embarrassed to admit that he was in the Navy, yet wasn’t the best swimmer.

With the ocean close, Thompson made his way down to St. Augustine to visit. After his time in the Navy, Thompson moved to St. Augustine. He was living with his girlfriend of the time. His girlfriend gave him the idea that he should and could go back to school. Thompson took the idea into consideration. Thompson participated in community projects at St. John’s River community college. These projects caused him to gain an interest for the school to eventually wanting to pursue being a student at the college. “I think you can never have too much knowledge,” says Thompson.

Thompson really was proud of himself being the first of as least 3 generations to attend college. Thompson’s relationship ended and his girlfriend moved out. Thompson’s ex-girlfriend’s younger brother Michael Danielson, 19, moved in with Thompson to soon become his new roommate. “He makes me want to do better in life,” says Danielson. Danielson considers Thompson to be the older brother and role model he never had. Thompson has given Danielson wisdom and guidance while living together. They currently work at Carmelo’s deli as well as live together. Danielson considers Thompson to be one of the most inspiration people in his life. Adrienne Donelson, 19, is Thompson’s next door neighbor and friend who believes Thompson is a positive influential person to associate with. “He’s accomplished so much at such a young age and he has really turned his life around,” says Donelson.

Thompson is currently attending school at St. Johns River community college and working at Carmelo’s Marketplace deli making pizzas. Although Thompson doesn’t get to see his son Sebashtian, 7, as often as he would like he continues to be a loving father that wasn’t present in his life. “I feel I am exactly where I need to be doing exactly what I am doing,” says Thompson. Thompson life is in the right direction for success where ever it may lead him.

Assignment # 1

Local residents of St. Augustine, Fla. express opinions about the legalization of marijuana in California. California’s renowned governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger is looking to research the benefits of legalizing marijuana to help budget deficit. Luckily, 4 generous residents affiliated with Flagler College assist in getting a growing consensus of how St. Augustine feels on legalizing marijuana for recreational purposes. Taken from the Miami Herald, “Well, I think it’s not time for (legalization), but I think it’s time for a debate,” Schwarzenegger said.

Chantiyana Beckett, 20, a current student at Flagler College gives her input. “Yes, I do agree with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s idea. It’s not going to affect me, but I should definitely consider moving to California! It would, also hopefully give the mayor of St. Augustine the idea to legalize marijuana. I feel marijuana is simply an herbal plant which is totally natural and gives you a natural high. You never hear of people dying from smoking marijuana. It helps your eye sight and is good for people with asthma. This proposition will help create jobs and assist the economy in just the right way to eventually spread the idea to the east coast. Beckett refers to Gov. Schwarzenegger as a “true hustler.”

Adrienne Donelson, 19, agrees with Beckett in supporting the plans of Gov. Schwarzenegger. The student says, “These efforts will affect me in a way of boosting the economy and hopefully rub off on other states.” Not only does Donelson feel it will help the economy, but stop drug crimes as well.

Jennifer Butler, 21, looks at the idea from a different perspective from the previous opinions, yet still supports the legalization. Jennifer believes that alcohol use in society is much worse than that of marijuana. “It will affect me, because if the law gets passed in California it will move out to other states and eventually get to St. Augustine. Gov. Schwarzenegger is thinking very logical about the situation.”

A librarian by the name of Brian Nesselrode, 37, does not agree with the marijuana being legalized for recreational purposes. “I really don’t think it will affect me one way or another. I don’t think marijuana should be legalized, because I just don’t! It will simply just cause more controversy. I don’t fault Gov. Schwarzenegger for looking into ways to help with the state’s financial crisis, but this is not the way to solve it.”

Tuesday May 5, 2009 Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says he’s open to debate on legal pot. Chronicle staff writer, Wyatt Buchanan examines the information being proposed in the dilemma. Buchanan writes, “The governor’s comments were made as support grows nationwide for relaxing pot laws and only days after a poll found that for the first time a majority of California voters back legal marijuana. According to the growing consensus, it seems St. Augustine will soon be contributing to the majority of backing marijuana as well.

Pop Singing Sensation, Britney Spears, was the victim of some "alligator's appetite."

Today at 5 am Britney Spears was located in the historical district of St. Augustine, Fl. Officer Bubba O' Conner mentioned the star visiting a friend of the opposite sex when she was attacked by an estimated 9 ft. long alligator. The reptile was said to have been an escapee from the local popular tourist attraction known as the Alligator Farm. Hector Gonzalez, a security guard on his daily rounds saw Britney on the ground near a bush bleeding; where the alligator had a different meaning to the song, "Hit me baby one more time". The alligator bit her on her right foot. The security guard called 9-1-1 at approximately 5:10 am. The paramedics arrived and treated the popstar at the scene. She was released with some swelling, but able to walk. Officer O' Conner's informations tells us that the security guard saw the tail of the reptile flee into the bushes outside Lewis House of Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fl. When officers arrived to search for the alligator they could not find the reptile. Let this be a lesson, be well aware of your surroundings. It could happen to anybody!

Bumps in the Writing Road

Growing up through school I always had difficulties with writing, hence the fact that I am on my way to receiving a diploma from Flagler College's Department of Business. My teachers would tell me I had a very creative mind, yet my thoughts didn't translate on to paper well. I had real trouble with my thoughts moving faster than my pencil. I would often leave out many words in sentences. It was a challenge just to follow the basic story map (characters, setting, events, resolution, ending). This was due to the simple fact that I was rather anxious to get my point across that I wouldn't realize many skipped details. My writing has progressed since then, but every so often I have to tell myself to slow down and write as if the reader is clueless to what I am writing about. I was taught various tactics from my mother, because she always saw the potential in my writing where others didn't. I don't believe writing is what I was meant to pursue, but that doesn't mean I won't continue to practice to help me in my journey into the real world. So how did I do writing this?
