On Wednesday May 13, 2009 Alabama suffers an extra crispy road accident. Jeff Johnson was behind the wheel of a truck transporting over 300 chickens when he made an illegal left turn, causing an 11 car accident off McFarland Boulevard. The event took place at around 6 p.m., says Deputy John Jones. Jones reported 25 people injured, 23 of the 25 walked away with only minor scrapes and bruises.

“It was so hot out there I thought I might have fried eggs for dinner,” said Jones. The chickens on the other hand weren’t so fortunate. It was reported that 300 chickens suffered, 30 dead and 40 survived the crash. A spokesperson from the hospital, Clarence DiMotta reported that Sarah Bernell, a retired kindergarten teacher, endured a slight concussion. As for the chicken truck driver, Jeff Johnson was left in critical condition with bruises and a possible broken ankle.

Carlton Fitzsimmons, President of Alabama Poultry Inc., sent his sympathy out to the families involved in the wreck. Fitzsimmons mentioned that $700 was lost of the company, but was please to announce that insurance would give the company $10 for each chicken. Fitzsimmons also provided Johnson and his family with proper compensation due to the tragic occurrence.
